DIRECT ANSWER BOARD

Choose the surface, construction and finishing system in the right order.

What plywood is used for outdoor signs?

MDO is the main option for painted, printed and vinyl-faced sign blanks because its medium-density overlay provides a smooth, stable finishing base. HDO suits harder, lower-absorption surfaces, while selected exterior plywood can serve project finishes that begin with natural veneer. Specify the face, core, exterior bond, back, edges and finish together.

How does an MDO sign panel resist outdoor moisture?

Outdoor durability comes from the complete construction: a compatible overlay and exterior bond, balanced face and back, sealed factory edges, resealed cuts and holes, protected fixings, rear ventilation and drainage. The coating supplier's preparation and cure instructions complete the weather-protection system.

Can plywood be used for traffic or road-work signs?

Plywood can serve approved temporary works-zone and project signs when the responsible authority permits a wood substrate. The project specification then identifies the reflective sheeting, graphics, dimensions, sign plate, support, wind design, installation and inspection requirements.

Should a sign project use MDO or HDO?

Choose MDO for paint, primer, screen or digital print, vinyl and general sign fabrication. Choose HDO when the brief calls for a harder, smoother and lower-absorption surface. A representative coupon confirms adhesion, colour, sheen, edge treatment and cure before the production lot.

What information is needed to quote an outdoor sign panel?

State the sign family and service period; exposure and destination; blank size, thickness and shape; MDO, HDO or exterior face; core and exterior bond; moisture target; coating or film; machining; edge and hole sealing; packing; quantity and required documents.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Practical answers for panel selection, finishing, installation and maintenance.

DECISION QUESTIONS

Before the purchase order

Choose the right specification.

What plywood is best for outdoor signs?

MDO is the usual starting point for painted, printed and vinyl-faced signs. HDO serves harder, lower-absorption surface requirements, while selected exterior plywood supports veneer-led coating systems. Match the choice to the graphic system, core, exterior bond, sealed edges, support, exposure and maintenance plan.

What is the difference between MDO and HDO for signage?

MDO provides a medium-density overlay often evaluated for paint or print options; HDO provides a harder, lower-absorption overlay. The ordered core, bond, back, machining and finish still require separate confirmation.

How is MDO plywood protected for outdoor sign service?

Specify an exterior-bond panel with a compatible overlay and coating, balanced back, sealed factory edges, resealed cuts and holes, drainage, rear ventilation and protected fixings. Inspection and prompt repair preserve the weather-protection system.

Can plywood be used for regulated traffic or road-work signs?

Plywood can be supplied for regulated traffic or road-work signs when the responsible authority and project documents approve the substrate. The order then follows the nominated reflective sheeting, graphics, dimensions, support, wind design and complete-sign requirements.

What standards apply to outdoor sign panels in Europe?

The ordered plywood may use EN 636, EN 314 and EN 315 options, while EN 12899-1 concerns complete fixed-sign and component requirements. The project and destination authority decide applicability.

What should an Australian sign buyer identify in the specification?

Identify the applicable AS 1742 option, AS 1743 edition, retroreflective-sheeting option, state supplement, approved substrate, complete-sign responsible party and required project records.

How should factory edges, site cuts and drilled holes be treated?

State the factory edge system in the order. Clean and dry new cuts or bores, apply the compatible waterproof edge-sealing paint or coating, allow the specified cure and reinspect before installation.

How are paint, vinyl or reflective sheeting qualified on the panel?

The fabricator prepares a representative coupon using the ordered face, cleaning and sanding method, primer, coating, film or adhesive and full cure. Adhesion, appearance, edge lifting, colour and cleaning response are then approved before production.

What determines the service life of a plywood sign panel?

Climate, finish, edge and hole sealing, frame clearance, support, fasteners, installation, inspection and repair all matter. The page therefore defines service and replacement conditions rather than one fixed life.

What information is required for a quotation and first-article sample?

Provide the sign family, use period, environment, dimensions and shape, surface system, cuts and holes, frame and fixings, document and test requirements, quantity and destination, then state what the first article must freeze.
